Letter S in Black Lives Matter

by Muhammad Naqee

“My letter stands for Success; I believe it’s extremely important for people to figure out what success means to them. The word can be defined in so many ways. As a man of African descent, I am left to my own devices to figure out what success means to me. I painted a power fist holding different objects to represent success. The paint brush in one of the hands demonstrates my personal creative success as an artist.

I also feature the theme of work within my piece, because I feel that it’s essential to build a strong worth ethic no matter what you do in life. My mantra is, “Always work hard and smart!” I also painted a ladder in hope that we as a people aim to do better and reach for the highest apple in life. We can always improve ourselves no matter how flawed or flawless we deem ourselves to be.” M. Naquee

ABOUT THE ARTIST

“I'm a Chicago-based artist, born and raised on the south side of the city. Throughout my life, I've been exploring the various dimensions of art. I've always been told that I had a natural talent for creating things with my hands. However, I think there is no such thing as a natural talent. I always thought that if one firmly believes in something, one can manifest it in the exact way they visualize it.” M. Naquee
